Penanggalan

I think one of those most disturbing and gruesome of vampire folklore is the penanggalan or hantu penanggal. The detatched female head of (typically) a midwife who's made a pact with the devil that can fly during the night, it's entrails dangling beneath it--sometimes twinkling like will-o-wisps. Generally it feeds on pregnant women and/or young children.
